What!? Yes, you can grow succulents from their own leaves! For real?? Yes, it's so so simple too! With only 9 steps!
One day I accidentally snapped a leaf off one of my echeveria succulents. I was upset and set the leaf to the side. After about a week the leaf was starting to grow roots! I was confused asking myself "Why didn't it just die??" After research and watching a few youtube videos, I learned succulents can grow new plants just from their leaves. If you would like to learn how to propagate succulents off a leaf just like I did, keep reading!
You'll need:
- A succulent (Echeveria Succulent works best)
- Paper Towel
- Small pot/ container (can buy from dollar store)
- Soil (Cactus Soil)
Steps:
1st- Simply take a succulent and look for a leaf at the bottom.
2nd- Take the leaf and twist it back and forth until it comes off.
3rd- Place the leaf on a paper towel on a windowsill for a small amount of light. If you place it outside you risk too much direct sunlight or wind, which can blow the leaf away.
4th- Be patient and wait a week or so (sometimes longer) for the leaf to scab over.
5th- After you notice roots simply place the leaf on top of the soil in a small container or pot. It's recommended to keep the pot on the windowsill still.
6th- Take a spray bottle and lightly spray the leaf every day.
7th- Now just wait! The succulent will begin to grow larger if watered correctly and given enough sunlight!
8th- Once the succulent is large and the connected leaf died gently pull the leaf off. If the leaf does not pull off easily wait a little longer for it to detach. Watch my YouTube video to see how to detach a leaf. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x7RIqnt8vCU&t=27s)
9th- After a few weeks you will have a baby succulent! Make sure you're gentle with the new plant and care for it correctly.
Tips:
- Spray the leaf every day till it's bigger, then water it with a water bottle once the leaf dies. Be careful pouring the water, if it's too much pressure it can cause the succulent to move around and not allow the roots to attach.
- Not all succulents are the same, some will take longer to grow roots and new plants.
